⚠️ WARNING: All Australian businesses take note.
Safeguard your business online identity now, register your .AU domain name before it becomes available for anyone to claim.
If you already own a .COM.AU or .NET.AU domain for your business, you have until 20 September 2022 to secure the new shortened .AU equivalent of those domains, before the .AU version is made available for anyone to obtain.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recommends you register the .AU domain name equivalent of your existing domains, or your business could become victim of fraudulent activities online, by those who purchase that .AU domain in your business name.
For example, if you already have: mybusiness.com.au or mybusiness.net.au there is now the real possibility that anyone could register the new shortened .AU equivalent: mybusiness.au and use your brand for malicious purposes.
The au Domain Administration (auDA) introduced the new system in March, allowing anyone with a connection to Australia to register the new category of domain name, the shorter .AU version.
At the time, it was also decided that Australian businesses with an existing .COM.AU, .NET.AU or similar, would have until 20 September 2022 to reserve or register their equivalent .AU domain name before it became available to anyone.
It means that all Australian businesses need to work out if they want to buy the new .AU domain or face someone else grabbing it and using it, in anyway they choose.
Consider the potential of your business being digitally ambushed online and a $$ demand to surrender that domain to you, or the misuse of it, masquerading as your business online.
You would agree, your domain name is very much the identity of your business online and critical to your success. You can’t afford to have that identity and valuable brand asset being made available and bought by someone else.
If you haven’t already done so, it’s critical that you take the necessary steps to protect your business and brand and secure the shortened .AU domain.
