What does ‘Australian Made’ mean to you?
The merits of buying ‘Australian’ has always been advocated in Federal Parliament since Federation and championed by industry and manufacturers since the 1930’s.
In 1961 a national campaign called ‘Operation Boomerang’ was launched by the Associated Chambers of Manufacturing of Australia to strengthen the profile of local manufacturing and encourage us to buy locally made goods. The logo was a red boomerang on a blue circle background, which included the Southern Cross.
In 1986 the Australian Government commissioned the introduction of the ‘Australian Made’ logo, which was created by Melbourne designer Ken Cato. The result being the green triangle featuring a stylised gold kangaroo (the basis of today’s logo).
With the introduction of a code of practice and new guidelines in 2007, the icon was renamed the ‘Australian Made, Australian Grown’ logo and with some contemporary changes (rounded corners on the triangle and slightly altered kangaroo shape) the logo is what we see today.
Previous Roy Morgan Research has found that:
● 99% of Australians recognise the logo
● 92% of Australians are confident that products carrying the logo are genuinely Australian.
To me ‘Australian Made’ means making a conscious choice. It’s about backing Australians and their businesses, supporting the dreamers and risk-takers, while helping to boost our economy and maintain jobs.
But we can also raise our game and make it “Australian Made & Australian Owned” 🇦🇺 because there’s products that are certainly made here, but not owned here.
